The Bird

"Crow" by m78kem

I saw a black bird crushed on the pavement, wing bent like a check mark.

The tire made it two dimensional.

I stopped.

Wondered if maybe it was broken before the car came, if it struggled to hop, skip, jump out of the way, wings battling gravity.

Or if it was that split-second surprise, before it could react. Black rubber and the crunch of delicate hollow bone.

Maybe.

Maybe it died a natural death and its shell just happened to be that speed bump.

I doubt it, somehow.

If you ask me, I think that, maybe, it landed gracefully on the pavement.

Watched that car coming with one eye. Adjusted.

Just like that.

The lightness of the sky was too much.

It needed the weight of machine

or a dark tread to block out the sun.

I forget who said “The weight of the world is too much.” Reminds me of that. Lovely.

Poor bird. But elevated to such heights by a talented writer: what better fate could there be?
